This proud gem is a piece of Botswana agate. Botswana agate is prized for its purplish gray overtones and profusion of concentric bands. It's getting harder to come by these days and the prices are unfortunately going up. This was my first time getting to work with the material and I immediately saw why it's so popular. The fine translucent bands running through the transparent host chalcedony give the look of the delicate gills beneath a mushroom's cap.
This stone is cut into a nice high "tongue" cab, with a little variation. Almost like a modern skyscraper, there is a draping flat that runs from the apex of the stone down one side. The arching bands of the material are nicely framed by the shape on both sides of the stone. The base of the stone is beveled and polished as well. The stone weighs 10.49ct and measures 7 x 14.5mm at its base and is 17mm tall.
